Asia’s Cup runneth over

For those of you who had not noticed, or don’t really care, the Asia Cup is being conducted. For those of you who don’t care, please stop reading.

The Asia Cup is an ODI tournament held between the Asian cricket super powers. You might be surprised to know that includes Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. In what seems like overkill, the tournament started with two groups of three, followed by the Super Four round. Pardon me for yawning.

Check it out, should you like but I’ve a couple of things to report. Sri Lanka and India are both as yet undefeated. Last night, the ever green Sanath Jayasuriya, on his 39th birthday, peeled off a rather brisk 130 from just 88 balls. How the guy keeps doing it, I do not know. Wasn’t he dropped and “too old” about five years ago? Anyway, good for him. It may have “only be Bangladesh” but aside from Sangers (121) the next best effort was 20.

Early in the tournament, when Hong Kong turned out against Pakistan, the following players were not only making their ODI debuts, but their LIST A debuts (equivalent of Ford Ranger Cup or County limited over matches): JJ Atkinson, KH Butt, Irfan Ahmed, CK Kruger, Skhawat Ali and Zain Abbas. Needless to say Pakistan won easily (by a 155 run margin) but not before a scare – they were 1-0 after 3 balls.
