My daughter, Maddie, was lucky enough to be a guest in the Members’ stand today. She saw Ricky Ponting score a long awaited century at his happiest hunting ground of all. And not only that, Maddie saw Australia’s new captain make a rousing, undefeated 250.
I was admitted to the ground just after tea, and what a lovely time we had. I recall when India played at the SCG eight years ago. I went to day two as India piled on 700 and Tendulkar made a wonderful 200 – his first in Test cricket. It seemed a strange and unlikely role reversal today as Australia piled on over 350 for the loss of just one wicket, Clarke batted all day and scored his first 200.
Could he be the first to post a Test triple century at the SCG, in the grand old ground’s 100th Test?
I wait with interest to see how Australia’s new pace trio performs on a pitch without much assistance.
To save you all from boorish chest-beating, I have included some photos by Maddie and dongles.
